Reviews

EuroGamer - 9/10

Dreamed up five years ago and served up yesterday, it's an off-kilter vision of the future, a cumbersome game with odd priorities, certainly. But it's equally a game that heads off in unexpected and exciting directions, makes a few notable improvements, and overflows with love – for cars, for games technology and for its own mad pursuit. It's good that Gran Turismo's been away so long, because it's all the better to have it back.

Joystiq - 4/5 stars.

Here's the deal: If you're one of those car nuts I mentioned earlier, here's your game. Have fun, we'll see you in a year when you finally leave the house. If you're not in that group -- you like, even love racing games, but care less about tuning and more about the thrill of the race -- GT5 is like walking in on a group of physicists discussing string theory and asking who wants to go toss around a ball for a bit. You're looking to have fun; they're only interested in studying the math behind how it bounces.

Gran Turismo 5 is a 10/10 simulator wrapped up in a 5/10 game...

Destructoid - 10/10

Even beyond the 1,000 cars, dozens of track variations, countless modes, gorgeous visuals and mountains of options, Gran Turismo 5 has something more that speaks to the world's car lovers and racing fans.

Gamepro - 4.5/5
Quote:
There’s no denying that GT5 is absolutely incredible, but due to its immense size and complexity, not all its facets are of the same standard, and as a result it's brilliant, but imperfect. For the most part it delivers a 5-star experience. But I do feel compelled to ding it half a star, simply because of the parts of the game that don't.

GameInformer- 9.0/10
Quote:
We’ve all been waiting what seems like forever for Gran Turismo 5, and now that it’s here, I don't expect perfection, but tangible evidence that it was worth the wait. It is. I wasn’t blown away by every aspect of the game, but overall it’s easy to see the sheer amount of effort and craftsmanship that went into the game. This is a racing experience that racing fans should not miss.

1UP- A-
Quote:
If there's a lesson to be learned from Gran Turismo 5 (the game itself, not its epic journey to stores), it's not about braking zones, exhaust manifolds, and curve apexes -- it's about patience. Because Gran Turismo 5 contains a seemingly unending supply of driving experience to enjoy, if you just allow yourself the time to discover it.

From the Gamespot live video, a few things we already knew and some new:

Like
-Weather looks great.
-Physics look great.
-Drifting looks hard. (or probably the guy just sucked)
-Tons of options for tuning your car.
-Top Gear challenges.
-Track editor looks good.
-Mechanical damage in advanced modes is important.

Didn't like

-No cockpit view for standard cars. NONE.
-Exterior damage for standard cars is minimal, for premium cars is more of a "deformation".
-Cannot crash or bump cars in Top Gear challenges.(?)
-You have to unlock colors for painting your car by buying a car in that color, and the colors you unlock can only be used once. (?)
-The guy that will do the Gamespot review knows very little about racing games.

I was a little disappointed to find day/night and weather are only on some tracks, but at least it's something.

And my GOD the number of repeated cars! I know why they do it, but I wish sim games (and some more arcade-style games as well) would honestly add new cars instead of simple retreads.

Do you have to unlock the licenses to get anywhere in the game?

Saw those coming a mile away. The no cockpit for standard is my sticking point. Too many of them are standard for them to have not thrown a generic CP into them

Seems kind of silly of them, seeing as how the PSP GT game does have generic cockpit for those vehicles.

Ya I remember you and I in the forums talking about this when the news first hit.
God I was livid. I am not as angry now but still...just a fucking stupid stupid decision.

Other than that it looks amazing. The AI is really bad, but this is car porn and frankly there doesn't need to be much IQ in GT5 or in porn so thats fine.

I enjoyed the couple hours I spent with it but its a pass. I hope to god they figure something out for the cockpit view free downloads or something.

I do love the little touches on the menu's and just the polish of the presentation though. A good deal of love even in the menu's.

Can anyone tell me how detailed the Nascar and cart racing is in the game? Are there seasons or anything? Probably a little too much to ask for. After reading comments here I'm starting to think they tried to do too much for GT5. Maybe they should have narrowed down the number of cars and tracks so that they could include cockpit view and weather on all of them.

People are reporting that the Physics, and AI, get more realistic, and the Damage taken increases, as you progress on to higher difficulty settings.

I can see why they did that, they want everyone to win their first few races, not be battered right from the start.

Also, if you really care that much for the cockpit view, here's one solution posted:

I think the NASCAR, are just events you participate in, and you can take those cars and drive them on other circuits as well.

With the cockpit view, again, the way I see it, with the main game we get 200+ incredibly detailed cars unlike anything we have seen previously in any other console racing game, and everything else is just extra.

Not sure about the other things but the AI doesn't. Its already been talked about by the devs. There are little changes but they left it as a "takes the line pushes you everywhere" style. Sure they have some AI improvements but no real checks, no rubs unless you cause them by being in their line.

EDIT: And reading up on it the physics do not gradually get more realistic neither does damage. They just have the options in the menu which are already set on realistic and the races just get harder as any normal racing games do but their isn't any kind of new AI system or new Physics system in this game (physics are actually pretty good for a GT game though it is obviously not their strong point). That fits as I have seen the same issues on people's games after many hours of playing. So the problems persist with those as you go up. They don't suddenly get better sadly.

But if they add cockpits for the 800 cars I will buy it. GT has never been about AI. It's about collecting and seeing the world. Both of which this does awesome except for the ripoff about the cars. That's probably one of the worst decisions in a racing game I have ever witnessed. Coming from loving their older games, its almost a crime to be so dense on such a decision.

I don't get that kind of thinking. Look at the premium cars, they're absolutely fantastic. They did more than enough with the interiors, the rest of the time was probably used making sure everything else worked. I'm more interested on that the online works, rather than a cockpit view on the 12th different version of the Civic. One Premium Civic is enough for me.
